150/190; ) As upmarket as Cabanaconde gets, Kuntur Wassi is actually rather
charming and is built into the hillside above town, with stone bathrooms, trapezoidal win-
dows overlooking the gardens and a nouveau-rustic feel. Suites have enormous bathtubs.
There's also a bar, restaurant, library, laundry and foreign-currency exchange. The food
served here is top-notch city standard.
Pachamama Backpacker Hostal $

without/with bathroom S35/50, all incl breakfast; ) Run by the ultra-friendly and help-
ful Ludwig (who's fluent in English), Pachamama has plenty of room options (dorms,
doubles and other combos), a pizza oven, a fantastic crepe breakfast and an unexpectedly
warm-hearted bar. One-way bike excursions can be organized from the Cruz del Cóndor
for S25.
HOSTEL
La Posada del Conde $

50; ) This small journeyman hotel mostly has double rooms, but they are well-cared-
for with clean bathrooms. The rates often include a welcome mate (herbal tea) or pisco
sour in the downstairs restaurant. The same people run a smaller, slightly plusher and pri-
cier lodge up the road.

Pizza, pasta, sandwiches and cheap Cuba Libres are offered here overlooking the main
square and its bucolic donkey traffic. There's also a computer terminal charitably offering
free internet. Rooms are available.
INTERNATIONAL
Getting There & Away
Buses for Chivay (S5, 2½ hours) and Arequipa (S17, six hours) via Cruz del Cóndor leave
Cabanaconde from the main plaza seven times per day with Andalucia ( 44-5089) and
Reyna ( 43-0612). Departure times change frequently though, so check with the bus
company office on the main plaza. All buses will stop upon request at towns along the
main road on the southern side of the canyon.
