Chintheche Inn has 10 tin-roofed, low slung chalets and one family cottage. While they
might look ordinary on the outside, the rooms are beautifully finished within, enjoying un-
blemished lake views, separate lounges, step-through mozzie nets, capacious bathrooms,
myriad candles and upscale African chic.
The hotel restaurant is decked in wicker chairs, a crackling stone fireplace come even-
ing, and you can eat in or alfresco. The hotel can also organise a host of activities includ-
ing cycling and walks (through owner Wilderness Safaris). There's also an immaculate
shower block for campers set in its own area.
Kande Beach Resort $$

) About 7km from the Makuzi turn-off (55km south of Nkhata Bay), this travel-
ler's paen to hedonism has a lovely reed bar, bags of alfresco seating and hammocks to
flop on, plus beach palapa shelters for added shade.
There's a volleyball court, on-site dive centre (Aquanuts), as well as very nice chalets
with tree-trunk four-posters (unfortunately the latter are set away from the beach behind
the overland truck camping area, so you might not have a peaceful night). There are also
dorms and plenty of room to pitch a tent.

Sambani Lodge $

Set in peaceful, shaded gardens aglow with frangipani trees and flowers, chalets here are
faded but not without charm. Rooms come with bureaus, mozzie nets and en suites, and
the views from the verandah are serene. Reached by a rutted road.

Makuzi Beach Lodge $$$

US$70, r superior US$85; ) Your first glimpse of the beach Makuzi sits on is
trippy; it's bookended by hill and woods, and in between are tree-spouting granite
boulders angled in powder-fine sand.
Set in paradisical gardens, Makuzi's thatch-roofed, witches' hat rondavels are very
tempting, with boutique flourishes like four posters, tasteful linen and choice artwork. For
