In-Depth Information
MT MULANJE PORTERS RACE (MALAWI)
Originally only for Mt Mulanje porters, this 25km rocky run across rivers and gorges to
the 2500m high Chambe Plateau now has an international following. Hikers typically take
around 12 to 13 hours for the route; the runners do it in two to three.
August
Humpback whales are now readily spotted along much of the Mozambican coast. Al-
though dolphins are seen year-round, August tends to be particularly favourable for
sightings. Along the coast, hotels fill up, with peak-season prices.
TIMBILAS FESTIVAL (MOZAMBIQUE)
Watch Chopi musicians play intricate rhythms on large marimbas, often in orchestras con-
sisting of 20 or more instruments, plus singers and dancers. While the festival is not al-
ways well organised, the musical tradition is fascinating. It's held in the southern Mozam-
bique town of Quissico. See www.amizava.org .
KUSEFYA PANGWENA (ZAMBIA)
At Kusefya Pangwena, northern Zambia's Bemba people celebrate their 1830s victory
over the marauding Ngoni with a programme of music, drama and dance. The festival is
held near Kasama over four days in August.
September
Clear, dry weather, minimal foliage and dwindling rivers make September one of the
best months for wildlife watching, as animals congregate around scarce water
sources.
