happy with birding trails and nature walks in the surrounding forest. Forest Inn is 30km
south of Mkushi and 65km from Kapiri Mposhi; it is well signposted.
The restaurant at the Forest Inn is excellent, making it a good rest stop on a long drive.
Meals (ZMW15 to ZMW65) include burgers, grills and pasta dishes.

room to spacious brick chalets, so ask to see a selection. The friendly owner seems to
have a penchant for animal statues. There's also a good bar and restaurant here. It's behind
Chibefwe Upper Basic School and signposted from the main road.

Getting There & Away
There are regular buses to Lusaka (ZMW70, four hours), Mpika (ZMW70, four hours)
and Kasama (ZMW110, six hours) from the bus station in Mkushi town.
Serenje

Serenje is a relatively uninspiring town spread out around the Great North Road. The only
reason for travellers to pass through is for a convenient refuelling stop on the way to more
exciting destinations. There are two main hubs in the town: the turn-off at the junction,
which has a petrol station, a couple of shops and a few basic restaurants; and the town
centre, 3km north of the Great North Road, which has a bank, a market, a bus station and
some lodgings.
DRIVING IN NORTHERN ZAMBIA
The road network in Northern Zambia has dramatically improved in recent years with the resurfacing of the old
Great North Road, or M1, right up to Mpulungu. There is barely a pothole in sight on the main roads, but some of
the most popular attractions are located along graded dirt tracks. With careful driving it is just about manageable
