This bawdily decorated,
iconic eatery near the White Tower is a local institution offering refreshingly light
souvlaki and
soutzoukakia
(meat rissoles in tomato sauce) with vegetable dips, in
Cypriot-style pitta bread. Look for the neon sign.

A new restaur-
ant near the western Byzantine walls, Sebriko became a hit after opening in 2012. It
doesn't overlook the walls, but is a friendly place with simple taverna-style decor, good
salads and grills, and even
Sfakiani pita
from Crete (Cretan pitta served with honey).

This trendy new Ladadika eatery, popular with young Greeks, specialises in
healthy mezedhes (appetisers) such as seaweed with feta cheese and cherry tomatoes,
tasty fried shrimp and 'black' risotto, darkened by squid ink. Plenty of
tsipouro
(distilled
spirit similar to ouzo but usually stronger) and wines are on hand, too.

Kouskoura 3-5; mezedhes €6-10; 9am-1am)
With an
adjoining, eponymous shop, Ergon is dedicated to the trendy 'locally sourced' concept,
using recipes and ingredients from specific parts of Greece. While it's a bit precious and
the portions small, there's no denying that itinerant celebrity chef Dimitris Skarmoutsos
(a 'MasterChef Greece' TV judge) knows his stuff. Try the aubergine with prosciutto,
sizzling egg and cheese croquettes.

( 2310 532 774; Oplopiou 3, Ladadika; mains €7-10; 12pm-1am)
This neat and tidy new
Ladadika taverna does excellent fresh fish and inventive grills (try the beef
soutzoukakia
on risotto with yoghurt). Ask owner Haris to decipher the colourful daily special's chalk-
board behind the door.
