( 2310 510 852; www.paparouna.com ; cnr Pangaiou 4 & Doxis; mains €7-11; 10am-2am) The
ever-popular Paparouna spills onto the pavement in its new Ladadika location, having
brought with it its vibrant colours, checkerboard floor, cheerful staff and an intriguing
menu which changes seasonally. Try the sauteed pork with mustard cream and fresh
mushrooms, or baked bream with sauteed grue. Charismatic chef and owner Antonis La-
das plays Latin, soul and jazz inside, enhancing the youthful vibe.
I Nea Follia GREEK $
MAP
( 2310 960 383; cnr Aristomenous & Haritos; mains €7-11; 1.30pm-1am Sep-Jul) This is the
kind of place Anthony Bourdain would pretend to discover. A bare-bones taverna opened
in 1966 on a nondescript north-side alley, it was recently commandeered by three young
chefs serving classic Greek fare with a contemporary twist.
The menu changes daily, so it's hard to augur what they'll do next, but it's very vegie-
friendly and there's a stunning range of cheeses. Good meat dishes include pork with
apricot sauce. Closed August.
I Giannoula GREEK $
MAP
( 2310 263 928; Kassandrou 50; mains €4-6; 10am-11pm Sep-Jun) Although kindly Kyria
Giannoula may be a step slower at age 80, she still does much of the cooking at this tiny
taverna she established in 1974, north of the Roman Agora. Try her tasty spinach salad
and the kotopoulo gemisto (chicken stuffed with cheese). And hey, she may surprise you
with something not even on the menu. Closed July and August.
Myrsini CRETAN $
MAP
( 2310 228 300; Tsopela 2; mains €8-12; lunch & dInner Sep-Jun) Down near the White
Tower, Thessaloniki's original Cretan restaurant serves a delicious array of representative
dishes, from dakos (rusks topped with tomato and olive oil) and wild horta (greens) to
roast rabbit and myzithropitakia (flaky filo triangles with sweet sheep's milk cheese).
The worn wooden floors and traditional decor is enhanced by violin-driven Cretan mu-
sic. Usually closed July to August.
