Now here's something
special, an authentic slice of Mauritian life in the midst of Flic en Flac. May has converted
her unpromising little roadside bar-restaurant into a cosy space that somehow captures the
essence of coastal Mauritius. She offers good breakfasts, but likes nothing better than to
serve up a multicourse dinner feast of Creole dishes - rice, chicken, octopus, Creole saus-
ages and 'some vegetables you've never heard of before' - with dessert and rum thrown
in for the price. You'll need to order the day before you plan to visit, and prices were ex-
pected to rise not long after we were there, but these are minor details. Don't miss it.

It's well worth planning
your visit to Casela around lunchtime to grab a bite at the on-site restaurant. This charm-
ing open-air cafe has photogenic views of the sea and western plains, and serves a variety
of international and local dishes, including snacks, salads, paninis and pizzas.

You'll need a taxi or rental car to get here, but you'll be really glad you made the trip. Flic
en Flac's most refined dining experience sits in colonial-style pavilions with gauzy net-
ting, wooden banisters and sky-scraping cane in the distance. The predominantly Chinese
menu is the brainchild of chef Hang Leung Pah Hang and the food is excellent - locals
come from all over the island to get their frequent fix of crab, calamari and succulent lob-
ster.

Chez Pepe is a lively spot serving up
Italian faves like pizza, pasta and rustic Tuscan meats. It won't be a particularly memor-
able meal, but it's one of the best place for a bite along Flic en Flac's beachside road.
