Eating
Flic en Flac has quite a paradoxical dining scene. Wealthier vacationers tend to stay on the
grounds of their upmarket hotels to take advantage of their 'half-board' holiday packages,
while budgetarians usually opt to self-cater or nibble on street fare. This leaves a strange
void in the middle of the dining spectrum, and as a result there's a noticeable lack of out-
of-this-world establishments in central Flic en Flac.
Foodies should consider booking a reservation at an in-house restaurant on the grounds
of one of the top-end hotels, or drive down to Black River for a more memorable and ec-
lectic assortment of eats.
For something a little more earthy, you'll find fast-food trucks parked under the weep-
ing filao trees along the sand at the northern part of the public beach. They serve fruit,
chips, drinks, kebabs and all manner of baguettes, all for no more than Rs 60. You can't
see Le Morne from this part of the beach, but it's a scenic spot to enjoy a bite nonetheless.

(Le Papayou; 453 9826; Royal Rd; mains Rs 100-250; 9.30am-3pm & 6-10pm Mon-Sat) Service can
come with a smile or a scowl at this tiny local joint, but that's all just part of the charm.
It's lost a little since a change in management but you'll still find scores of locals flocking
here on their lunch break for the cheap eclectic menu (paella, pizza etc) at pinchpenny
prices. Try the signature dessert 'papayou' (cooked payapa sweetened with sugar and ice
cream) with a cup of fresh coffee - Flic en Flac's finest.

( 453 9099; Royal Rd; mains Rs 200-350; noon-3.30pm & 6-10pm) We're not sure how much of a
compliment it is to say that Ah-Youn's best features are its swift service and generous por-
tions, but alas it's true. Don't worry though, the food is perfectly palatable and, frankly, a
much better choice than many of the other restaurants in town. The kitchen's focus is
mainly Chinese fare, but Mauritian flavours have crept onto the menu as well.
