ROMANTIC GRAND BAHAMA
Just a 25-minute flight from the US, Grand Bahama is a popular pick for
couples on quickie weekend getaways. Make the most of your alone time with
the following suggestions.
Stay at
Pelican Bay
(

), an upscale boutique property with intimate
villas and a swanky pool lounge and restaurant, on the quiet side of Port Lucaya
Marketplace. Head across the street to unwind with a Sense of Togetherness
couples massage at the
Senses Spa & Fitness Center
(

) in the our
lucaya beach & golf resort, then stay on for the classic romantic dinner combo
of steak, wine and dim lighting at the resort's
Churchill's Chophouse
(

here
). Get away from the crowds at
Gold Rock Beach
(

) in Lucayan
National Park, where you'll often have the sands entirely to yourselves. If hanky
panky ensues, well, the pelicans won't tell anyone! Before you leave, buy each
other a little memento of your island time - how does a bottle of customized,
named-after-you perfume from the
Perfume Factory
(

) sound?
Simply Native
BAHAMIAN $
( 242-352-5003; East Beach Dr; mains $6-12; breakfast, lunch & dinner) Hands-
down best grits we have had in ages. If you want to try chicken souse, johnnycakes and
other traditional Bahamian dishes - and eat where locals eat - ditch Port Lucaya and come
here. Hanging baskets of flowers don't go far in sprucing up the dim, wood-railed dining
room but who cares, just pass the grits. It's just east of Ranfurly Circus off East Sunrise
Hwy.
Le Rendezvous
INTERNATIONAL $$
( 242-352-9610; International Bazaar; mains $8-22; breakfast, lunch & dinner) This
frilly little pink-and-turquoise trooper of a restaurant has clung to life while the Interna-
tional Bazaar crumbled around it. New owners, a peppy Scottish-Bahamian couple, have
revived the menu with a long list of international favorites, from boil fish (a kind of break-
fast stew) to tacos to lasagna. Lunch specials, usually a Bahamian classic like barbecue ribs
with mac 'n' cheese, are a big draw.
Freeport Vendor's Market
BAHAMIAN $
( West Mall Dr, across from Winn Dixie Plaza; mains $8-10; breakfast, lunch & dinner)
This scrappy outdoor market has some of the city's best seafood stalls - locals recommend
McBane's for grilled conch. Also look for exotic fruit like custard apples, plantains, avoca-
dos.
