Taybet Zaman Hotel & Resort$$$
( 2150111; www.jordantourismresorts.com ; s/d from US$93/104; )
With the rose-tinted sandstone typical of Petra's famous landscape spread beneath the lin-
tels of this unusual hotel, you won't mind being a half-hour drive from the entrance to the
site. Indeed, the sequestered nature of the accommodation, in renovated local village
houses, is part of its unique appeal. With luxurious rooms, handicraft shops, swimming
pool and Turkish bath set in tranquil gardens of fruiting figs and flowering plumbago, it is
something of a rural idyll. The hotel is perched above expansive views of the Rift Valley
in Tayyibeh village; a taxi from Petra (10km) costs about JD15 one way. Ask to pause at
the spectacular viewpoint, just below the junction for the hospital. The hotel also has the
highly recommended terrace restaurant, Sahtain. If you want to be closer to Petra, ask
about their sister hotel in Wadi Musa, Beit Zaman.

( 2155100; rockymountainhotel@yahoo.com; s/ d/tr/q JD25/36/45/56, buffet lunch/din-
ner JD8/8; ) This delightful hotel near the junction with the main road downtown
has caught just the right vibe to make it a successful travellers' lodge. The hotel is 'big on
cleanliness' and there's a cosy communal area with free tea and coffee. If you're honey-
mooning in the area, ask for a double bed, as opposed to a twin, as extra care has been
lavished on these double rooms (JD38). Seven of the rooms have a shared terrace from
which to enjoy the magical views. A shuttle service to the Petra entrance at 7am and 8am,
returning at 4pm and 5pm, is free.

Al-Anbat Hotel I$
( 2156265; www.alanbat.com ; s/d/tr JD20/35/45, buffet lunch/dinner JD8/8;
) Located some way out of town, on the road between 'Ain Musa and Wadi Musa, this
three-storey resort offers midrange quality for budget prices. The large rooms (many with
gorgeous sunset views) have satellite TV and come with a balcony. All rooms have been
redecorated and those in the new extension are particularly attractive. Other facilities in-
clude a Turkish bath (JD15 for guests) and small pool but the best feature of the hotel is
the new restaurant, perched like a nest on top of the new block and with extensive views
of the Petra landscape from all windows. Free transport to/from Petra is available.
Campers (JD7 per person) can use a designated area with showers and a kitchen, and you
can park a campervan.
