At the heart of the museum is the glassworks, where exhibitions are staged
every summer. There is also a permanent exhibition here entitled “From Cobalt
Ore to Blue Pigment.” Also on-site is a children's farm along with a cafe,
Bodtker Café (Old Copper Inn), where you can order lunch.
In one building, the Wheel House, an exhibition tells the history of the
mines. You can buy the makings of a picnic at Bodtker Café, to be enjoyed in
the spacious park, which has tables and benches opening onto the Simoa River.
There is a bathing spot near the river where you can go for a refreshing dip, plus
a small playground nearby. Fishing is free.
You can visit on your own or with a guided tour (in English) for 25NOK
($3.55) per person. The trip should take 40 minutes.

Theodor Kittelsen Museum This museum, near the cobalt mines,
possesses the country's largest collection of the haunting, evocative, and myste-
rious works of this acclaimed national artist. His paintings of the Norwegian
landscape, and of trolls and folktales, have made him popular with adults and
children. No artist is better at depicting nøkker (water sprites) and nisser
(gnomes) than Kittelsen. In addition to paintings, his oeuvre includes carved
furniture, watercolors, and various drawings. On display are some of the illus-
trations from the much-loved collections of children's books by Asbjørnsen and
Moe. Allow 15 minutes.

Horten: 35km (17 miles) S of Drammen; Åsgårdstrand: 10km (6 miles) S of Horten
Most visitors come to this small port and naval base to catch a car ferry across
the Oslofjord to Moss. (The ferry leaves hourly; the trip takes 30 min.) There
are only some minor museums here, which you might want to skip if you're
pressed for time. Otherwise, you can spend around 2 hours viewing these sights.

GETTING THERE A suburban train from the National Theater in Oslo and
a train from Oslo's Central Station run frequently through the day to Horten.

Motorists can reach Horten by following E18 south from Oslo via Drammen.

SEEING THE SIGHTS
Horten Bil Museum The history of the automobile is showcased here, with
three dozen automobiles and other vehicles from the turn of the 20th century
