Marinemuseet (Royal Norwegian Navy Museum) Since Horten was
once a major base for the Norwegian Royal Navy, it's only appropriate that its
major attraction is this naval museum, located in a munitions depot constructed
in the 1850s. The museum is especially rich in marine artifacts of the Danish
and Norwegian navies, some of which date from the 1500s. These include ships'
bells, figureheads, and one-person submarines, among other displays. On
exhibit outside the museum is the world's first torpedo boat, developed in Nor-
way in 1853.
Karl Johns Vern. & 33-03-33-97. Free admission. May-Sept daily noon-4pm; Oct-Apr Sun noon-4pm.
Norsk museum for fotografi-Preus fotomuseum In this unlikely
location, you'll find the national museum of photography in Norway, and the
world's largest library devoted to books on photography. The exhibitions con-
tain both Norwegian and international photographs. The museum's intriguing
collection of photographs was assembled privately by Leif Preus at this large
former naval warehouse. You can see the works of such internationally acclaimed
photographers as Tom Sandberg and August Sander, as well as a recreated cen-
tury-old photographer's studio. For shutterbugs, the nearly 5,000 cameras on
display are alone worth the visit, including one that dates from 1840.
