IN GLENWOOD
Flying L Ranch With its meadows and ponderosa pines, this 160-acre
ranch in a wide valley at the foot of Mount Adams is the ideal base for explor-
ing this area. In summer, you can head up to the alpine meadows on the slopes
of the mountain, and in winter, there are cross-country ski trails on the ranch
and also nearby. While the two cabins, tucked under the pine trees, offer lots of
room and privacy, the rooms in the old 1940s lodge have a classic ranch feel.
Other rooms are in a separate guesthouse with a rooftop observation deck. The
hot tub has a view of the mountain.

IN HOOD RIVER, OREGON
Columbia Gorge Hotel Just west of Hood River off I-84 and in business
since shortly after 1915, this little oasis of luxury offers a genteel atmosphere that
was once enjoyed by Rudolph Valentino and Clark Gable. With its yellow-stucco
walls and red-tile roofs, this hotel would be at home in Beverly Hills, and the hotel
gardens could hold their own in Victoria, British Columbia. The hotel is perched
more than 200 feet above the river on a steep cliff, and it is difficult to take your
eyes off the view. Unfortunately, the interior of the hotel has gone a little too long
since it was last updated, and rooms are looking decidedly old-fashioned. Despite
the canopy beds and brass beds, many of the rooms are rather cramped, as are the
bathrooms, most of which have older fixtures. In addition to the hotel's famous
breakfast, there is a complimentary champagne-and-caviar social hour each
evening. On Sundays high tea is served.

WHERE TO DINE
The dining rooms of Bonneville Hot Springs Resort in North Bonneville,
Dolce Skamania Lodge in Stevenson, and the Lyle Hotel in Lyle are by far the
best restaurants on the Washington side of the Gorge. See above for details.
IN HOOD RIVER, OREGON
Brian's Pourhouse ECLECTIC Located in an old house a few blocks
up the hill from downtown Hood River, this restaurant is a casual, fun place
with very creative food. In summer, the big deck is the place to eat, and any time
of year, the stylish little bar area is a cozy place for a cocktail or a local micro-
brew. For a starter, try the unagi (smoked eel) and avocado tempura roll, which
is served with a mild wasabi cream sauce. You'll find other Asian influences on
the menu in the form of coconut red curry and sesame-crusted ahi tuna with
wasabi-potato rolls. However, there are also more straightforward dishes such as
beef tenderloin with garlic mashed potatoes.
