WHERE TO STAY
IN STEVENSON
Bonneville Hot Springs Resort Although this new hot springs resort
doesn't have any views to speak of, it is still one of your best bets for a memorable
stay in the Columbia Gorge. With lots of stone and wood detail work used in the
construction, this hideaway in the woods has the feel of a modern mountain lodge,
although the furnishings are more classically European in styling. The focal point
of the lobby is a huge river-rock fireplace. There's an 80-foot-long hot-springs-fed
indoor pool, a full-service spa, and a big outdoor hot tub in a courtyard with an
unusual stone wall down which water cascades. Guest rooms have balconies (ask
for one overlooking the courtyard), beds with ornate wood headboards, and attrac-
tive bathrooms. Some of the rooms have their own mineral-water soaking tubs.

cise room; full-service spa; 3 Jacuzzis; limited room service; massage. In room: A/C, TV, dataport, fridge,
coffeemaker, hair dryer, iron.
Dolce Skamania Lodge Boasting the most spectacular vistas of any
hotel in the Gorge, Skamania Lodge is also the only golf resort around. How-
ever, it is also well situated whether you brought your sailboard, hiking boots, or
mountain bike. The decor is classically rustic with lots of rock and natural wood,
and throughout the hotel there are Northwest Indian artworks and artifacts on
display. Huge windows in the lobby have superb views of the Gorge. Of course,
the river-view guest rooms are more expensive than the forest-view rooms
(which overlook more parking lot than forest), but these rooms are well worth
the extra cost. There are also rooms with fireplaces available.

IN LYLE
Lyle Hotel Located at the east end of the Gorge in the tiny town of
Lyle, this old-fashioned hotel first opened for business in 1905. Today the
rooms, though small and lacking private bathrooms, have a cozy, traditional feel,
with quilts on the old wood or brass beds. Large windows let in lots of light. Best
of all, there is an excellent restaurant on the ground floor, which makes this your
best base for exploring the eastern end of the Gorge.
100 Seventh St. (P.O. Box 114), Lyle, WA 98635. & 509/365-5953. www.lylehotel.com. 10 units, all with
shared bathrooms. $64 double. Rates include continental breakfast Mon-Sat. AE, MC, V. Amenities: Restau-
rant (International); lounge. In room:No phone.
