from the ceiling of this inviting and friendly old inn, which offers real ales, pub grub, an
open fire on cold nights and live acoustic music on Tuesdays. The rooms above the pub
are comfortable and atmospheric; however, be prepared for noise until closing. Enquire

win any awards for its decor but this old charmer (constructed in 1862 as a coaching inn)
has clean and comfortable rooms, and a staff that's eager to please. 'Courtyard' rooms
open onto an enclosed walkway at the rear.

You can live the fantasy and stay within the famous fairy-tale village itself in
one of 17 whimsical cottages. Down by the water, the over-the-top Hotel Portmeirion
(1926) has elegant rooms with quirky wallpaper. Up the drive, storybook Castell
Deudraeth is, perversely, a more modern alternative, despite its Victorian provenance.
Prices drop considerably in low season.

Although this cool cafe
is church-run, you needn't fear any morals being served with your morning mocha. The

Tremadog's main square (if you hadn't already guessed from the name), this atmospheric
eatery serves French food with a Welsh accent. Get in before 7pm for the early bird set
menu (two/three courses £16/19; not offered on Saturday).
