Around Brecon
The conical hill of Pen-y-Crug (331m), capped by an Iron Age hill fort, rises to the north-
west of the town, and is a good option for a short hike (2.5 miles round trip). There's a su-
perb view of the Brecon Beacons from the summit. The tourist office sells national park
walk cards.

con, Cantref operates a child-focused fun farm, complete with pig races, lamb feeding and
people dressed as horses, dancing for the little troops. More interesting for adults are the
pony trekking and hacking (per hour/half-/full day £18/27/50), heading out into the Bre-
con Beacons.
It's reached by a set of narrow country lanes; follow the horseshoe signs from the A40,
southeast of town. Bunkhouse accommodation (from £14) and basic camping is available.

fee & toast) This small but lively hostel between Brecon and Crickhowell is sited in the
former New Inn pub, which is still licensed. As well as booze and live music nights, the
hostel also provides lunch and dinner, and you can order in stone-baked pizza. It has great
hand-outs on local walks, and you can hike with the hostel staff, who will also help out if
you want to go canoeing or ice-climbing.
