spaces remain and if there's a charge.
Taxi
The southwest's towns and cities are well served by taxis, with ranks to be found near shopping centres, train stations
and popular nightlife zones. In many rural areas there's also a reasonable network, partly because public transport is
scarce and a taxi for four people often provides a fairly cost-effective means of getting around.
In the region's cities taxis cost around £3 to £4 per mile; in rural areas, it can be about half this. Taxi ranks are marked
on Lonely Planet's maps; phone numbers for local firms are also given.
RAIL VIEWS
Some of the region's train routes offer superb coastal and estuary views. It's definitely worth looking out the win-
dow between the following places:
» Exeter and Newton Abbot
» Plymouth and Gunnislake
» Plymouth and Liskeard
» St Erth and St Ives
» St Erth and Penzance
The website Great Scenic Railways of Devon and Cornwall ( www.carfreedaysout.com ) has a wealth of inform-
ation, plus details of local walks.
