In-Depth Information
Bridge Tolls
There is a bridge toll for drivers leaving Cornwall on the A38 via the Tamar Bridge, near Plymouth. Rates are £1.50 for
a car and £3.70 for touring vans over 3.5 tonnes. Charges apply eastbound only; you can pay by cash at the booths. The
bridge is free for motorcyclists, pedestrians and cyclists.
Car Ferries
The Isles of Scilly and Lundy Island aside (see Boat section), you don't have to get on a boat to get around Devon and
Cornwall, but it is an atmospheric way to explore the region. The deep rivers and wide estuaries that cut into the land-
scape sometimes make ferries the fastest, most scenic, route from A to B. At other times peak-period ferry queues make
that 20-mile road detour seem like a better idea.
Some ferries take cars, people and bikes but some only carry foot passengers; we specify throughout the guide. The
key car ferries run all year while some other routes are seasonal. If you miss the boat you can go by road (or sometimes
path), although the detour can be significant, especially for cyclists and walkers.
The following are one-way, combined car and passenger fares. Unless specified, charges apply when travelling in
both directions.
Bodinnick to Fowey Ferry Links mid and east Cornwall, cutting out the detour to Lostwithiel; £3.50.
Dartmouth Higher/Lower Ferry Crosses the River Dart at Dartmouth in Devon, providing a shortcut to Torquay;
£4.70/4.
King Harry Ferry A short cut to the Roseland Peninsula; crossing the Fal River from near Trelissick Gardens to Phil-
leigh, a few miles north of St Mawes; £5.
Torpoint Ferry Shuttles between Devon and Cornwall, a shortcut from the city of Plymouth to the Rame Peninsula;
£1.50; charges apply eastbound only.
Car Hire
Rates echo those charged nationwide. The region's airports and cities, and many major towns, have car-hire outlets.
Firms with a good presence in the region include Avis, Europcar and Hertz.
Avis (

Europcar ( 0871-384 1087; www.europcar.co.uk )
Hertz ( 0843-309 3099; www.hertz.co.uk )
National (
0871-384 1140; www.nationalcar.co.uk ) Has branches at Exeter and Newquay Cornwall airports.
Parking
Expect to pay from £1.40 to £1.60 for an hour and around £8 to £12 for the day. Sometimes a minimum two-hour rate is
charged, while maximum durations are from 30 minutes onwards. Be aware, in some towns you won't have to buy a
ticket to park overnight on one road, but will on a neighbouring one.
Charges at beaches, even remote ones, can also mount up; some cost per two/three hours £2.50/3.70, or £7 a day.
Parking can also be at a premium amid the winding, cobbled streets of the region's fishing villages and tourist hot
spots. Many have park-and-ride systems, with costs ranging from around £2.50 to £5.
