Bideford, Appledore & Around
POP 17,110
The graceful expanse of the Taw-Torridge estuary has shaped the communities along its
banks for centuries and still does. Businesslike Bideford stretches along a river quay, with
shops, pubs and houses on the hills behind.
Three miles down river, pretty Appledore provides expansive views over miles of wide
water towards distant clusters of white houses and shifting sand dunes. Lined with flower
boxes and pastel-painted terraces, some of its streets are too narrow for cars; its an unusu-
ally tranquil place.
