campment of restored Romany caravans. The three brightly painted wagons boast log
burners, funky fabrics and snug sleeping platforms. Night lights in jam jars lead to a vast
fire pit encircled by log benches, a hamper full of crockery and ranks of cast iron pans.
There's even a bailer twine-sprung outdoor bed, so you can slumber under the stars. It's
all done with love and humour, and is impossible to resist. You have to book the entire
camp (which sleeps six to 12), which is 10 miles south of Barnstaple.

from rescue chickens and homemade jam at this charming 17th-century farmhouse. The
cream rooms are light, calm and framed by flower boxes, while the Tarka Trail and a re-
serve teeming with birds are just 200 yards away. It's three miles west of Barnstaple off
the B3233.

A surprise: a Michelin-starred eatery in a thatched 13th-century pub deep in rural north
Devon. Expect modern takes on European classics. Try the smoked scallops with wasabi
and vermouth sauce, or confit of duck with red wine jus, but leave room for a chocolate
and raspberry mousse made zingy by lime. The Mason's Arms is 20 miles southeast of
Barnstaple - it's worth the drive.
