fingered inspiration. One of only four RHS centres open to the public nationwide, its 26
enchanting hectares are a vivid, fragrant oasis, full of colour, serenity and a wealth of
styles ranging from arboreta and croquet lawns to shade, terrace and town gardens. The
fruit and veg section is an object lesson of rows, raised beds and containers. Other high-
lights include the tree ferns, bananas and ginger lillies in the exotic garden, the sweeps of
colour in the cottage garden and Rosemoor's famous heavily-scented rose garden. Rose-
moor is one mile south of Great Torrington, off the A3124.

Torrington 1646
( 01805-626146; www.torrington-1646.co.uk ; South St, Great Torrington; adult/child £8/6; tours 10am-2pm
Tue-Thu Apr-Aug) Prepare for an earthy, funny, multisensory recreation of a key English Civil
War battle. In the eponymous 1646 the Parliamentarians surged into Great Torrington,
confronting and defeating those loyal to the King - a battle that ended Royalist resistance
in the West Country. Tours are led by cheeky costumed guides who expound tales of
leech-breeders, urine-takers and bum-rolls. They also tease visitors remorselessly; women
who sit with crossed legs will be the butt of more than a few jokes. Book to be sure of a
tour.
