Riverford Field Kitchen
MODERN BRITISH ££
(
01803-762074; www.riverford.co.uk ; Wash Barn; 3-course lunch/dinner adult £23/27, child £11/13;
noon-3pm daily, from 7.30pm Mon-Sat; ) As one of Britain's leading veg-box suppliers,
Riverford is synonymous with organic, sustainable food. Fittingly, its eco-bistro is set in
the middle of a farm, meaning minimal food miles. Vegetables are picked to order from
the fields outside, and meats are organic and locally sourced. Big trestle tables fill a futur-
istic hangar-like canteen, with diners passing around platters laden with richly flavoured
food. Imaginative treatments might include marinated, grilled Moroccan lamb and British
veg transformed by cumin or saffron. You have to book and take a self-led or guided tour
of the fields. The Field Kitchen is 3 miles west of Totnes.
Sharpham Vineyard Café
( 01803-732178; www.vineyardcafe.co.uk ; Sharpham Estate; mains £10-15, snacks £4-7; noon-2pm May-Oct;
) Rustic, organic fare fills the tables of this decked cafe, anchored just yards from
Sharpham's vines. Treats include smoked fish or charcuterie boards, local crab salads and
hearty fare such as belly pork and bean cassoulet. And, of course, the vineyard's own,
simply superb cheese and wine. It's 3 miles south of Totnes.
BISTRO ££
White Hart
( 01803-847111; www.dartingtonhall.com ; Dartington Estate; tapas £5, mains £12-17; tapas noon-9pm, dinner
6-9pm; ) To its already-acclaimed gastropub dishes, the White Hart has added a British
tapas menu, so you can graze on mini-bundles of flavour washed down with a carafe of
wine. Menus change daily, but ham hock, lamb cutlets, scallops or wild mushroom risotto
might pop up. Winter brings a blazing fire; on fine evenings the lawnside tables are the
place to be.
PUB ££
Rumour
(
PUB ££
01803-864682; www.rumourtotnes.com ; 30 High St; mains £7-18;
noon-3pm Mon-Sat, 6-9pm daily;
)
Rumour is a local institution - a narrow, cosy pub-restaurant with low lighting, funky
local art and free newspapers. Famous for its crispy pizzas (£7), it also rustles up stylish
cuisine, such as pollock roasted with avocado butter, and irresistible 28-day matured 8oz
steaks.
