WORTH A TRIP
BERRY POMEROY CASTLE
Even the most level-headed are set to get spooked at the immense 17th-century ruin of Berry Pomeroy (EH;
01803-866618; www.english-heritage.org.uk ; adult/child £5/3; 10am-6pm Apr-Sep, to 5pm Oct), 2 miles east
of Totnes. The crumbling walls of its roofless shell soar up to three floors high. Individual rooms are still clearly
outlined, making it feel both partly normal and as if something has gone horribly wrong at the same time. The
sense of menace increases at St Margaret's Tower, a circular well-like structure where Lady Margaret Pomeroy is
said to have been imprisoned and starved to death by her jealous sister. Her ghost (apparently) roams the battle-
ments today.
