Outside Iguazú
Yacutinga Lodge This is the ultimate jungle experience. The fact that y ou have to
make the last leg of the journey there by boat makes you anticipate not so much the heart
of darkness, but the heart of another world—a world of giant butter flies, dazzling birds,
and hidden jaguars. I t is a world wher e five-star comforts do not exist, so be pr epared.
But the sacrifices y ou make (such as har d beds, limited menu, and patchy ser vice) are
worth it for a memorable experience. The Yacutinga Lodge is set in 570 hectar es (1,410
acres) of Jungle Book paradise, run to ensure that its pr esence has no negativ e effects on
the surr ounding envir onment; y ou ev en get to plant a tr ee befor e leaving. The decor
might look pseudo-Flintstone, but the chunky wood, adobe walls, and tiny colored glass
windows are all made fr om recycled material. E ven the coffee table is a discar ded tree
trunk, redesigned so you can put y our fruit juice on it. S et amid this E den-like Utopia
are four-r oom cabins with decent-siz e r ooms and a wood-fueled fir eplace ( June-Aug
mornings can be chilly). The decor is basic, and don't expect air-conditioning. The con-
stant mud, humidity , and water ( Wellingtons provided) are not for ev eryone, but the
experience is unforgettable. The lodge is 60km (37 miles) fr om Iguazú Falls.
