In-Depth Information
The easiest way to visit these scattered villages is to hire a private taxi (about C70 for a
full day).
Ntonso
Ntonso, 15km north of Kumasi, is the centre of adinkra cloth printing. Adinkra symbols
represent concepts and aphorisms; they are traditionally printed on cotton fabric by using
a natural brown dye and stamps carved out of calabash. You can see the whole process ex-
plained at Ntonso's Craft Centre (admission C3) and even create your own works; strips of fabric
are sold for C10 and make a lovely keepsake.
Tro-tros travelling north from Kejetia station stop at Ntonso (C1).
Adanwomase
This kente-weaving and cocoa-growing village wins the Palme d'Or of eco-tourism in
Ghana. Villagers here have put a huge amount of effort into developing fun, informative
tours.
There are two visits on offer: a kente tour and a village tour (C5 each, or C7 combined).
The kente tour takes you through the kente production process, from thread to finished
product, and lets you try your hand at spinning and weaving. The village tour for its part
takes you through the cocoa plantations, to local shrines and the local palace.
There are direct tro-tros (C1.10) from Kejetia station in Kumasi.

Lake Bosumtwe
With a depth of 86m, Lake Bosumtwe (also spelled Bosumtwi) is a crater lake that was
formed from the impact of a huge meteorite. The lake is hugged by lush green hills in
which you can hike, cycle and ride horses. Local hotels are your best bet to organise ex-
cursions. The Green Ranch ( 020 2917058; Lake Bosumtwe) offers horse-riding (per hour C30).
Located 38km southeast of Kumasi, the village of Abono is the gateway to Lake Bosumt-
we; it is a popular weekend holiday spot for Kumasi residents, who come here to relax
and swim (the water is bilharzia free). It's also a sacred site. The Ashanti people believe
that their souls come here after death to bid farewell to the god Twi. Historically, dugout
canoes and boats were forbidden on the lake, but the tide has turned and Bosumtwe be-
comes a haven for water-sport enthusiasts on the weekends.
