AROUND NICOSIA
The plain of the Mesaoria (meaning 'between two mountains') is a sprawling, parched
landscape during the summer months, when the land is totally exposed to the relentless sun.
But come spring and winter, the Mesaoria, like most of Cyprus, transforms into a green,
fertile plain. The two mountain ranges bordering the plain are the Kyrenia (Girne) Range to
the north and the Troƶdos Mountains to the west and southwest.
For the visitor wanting to explore the Mesaoria, there are a couple of ancient archaeolo-
gical sites and a sprinkling of churches and monasteries. Note that for some of the churches
and monasteries, you need to be in a group for those with the keys to be willing to unlock
the buildings.
