In-Depth Information
sters who were said to live on Li Galli (a tiny archipelago off the peninsula's southern
coast), the area to the west of Massa Lubrense is among the least developed and most
beautiful in the country.
Tortuous roads wind their way through hills covered in olive trees and lemon groves,
passing through sleepy villages and tiny fishing ports. There are magnificent views at
every turn, the best from the high points overlooking Punta della Campanella, the west-
ernmost point of the Sorrento Peninsula. Offshore, Capri looks tantalisingly close.
MASSA LUBRENSE
The first town you come to following the coast west from Sorrento is Massa Lubrense.
Situated 120m above sea level, it's a disjointed place, comprising a small town centre and
17 frazioni (fractions or hamlets) joined by an intricate network of paths and mule tracks.
For those without a donkey, there are good road connections and SITA buses regularly run
between them.
Sights & Activities
CHURCH
Chiesa di Santa Maria della Grazia
(Largo Vescovado; 7am-noon & 4.30-8pm) Don't forget your camera, as there are fab-
ulous views over Capri from the town's central Largo Vescovado. On its northern flank
stands the former cathedral, the 16th- century Chiesa di Santa Maria della Grazia, worth a
quick look for the bright majolica-tiled floor, which would look so good in your kitchen
back home.
HARBOUR
Marina della Lobra
From the square it's a 2km descent to this pretty little marina backed by ramshackle
houses and verdant slopes - or, rather, a 40-minute downhill walk, and a wheezing hour-
long ascent. The marina is a good place to rent a boat, the best way of reaching the other-
wise difficult-to-get-to bays and inlets along the coast.
Coop Marina della Lobra
( 081 808 93 80; www.marinalobra.com ; Marina della Lobra; per hr from €30) Oper-
ating out of a kiosk by the car park, this boat hire outfit is reliable.
