PRACTICALITIES
» The metric system is used for weights and measures.
» Since 2005, smoking in all closed public spaces (from bars to elevators, offices, trains and hotel rooms) has
been banned.
» The Veneto's major newspaper is Il Gazzettino ( www.gazzettino.it ). Each city has its own edition with spe-
cific local content. La Nuova Venezia ( www.nuovavenezia.it ) is Venice's own city paper and is a good source of
information on local events. Of the nationals, Corriere della Sera ( www.corriere.it ) is the most widely read, fol-
lowed closely by the centre-left La Reppublica ( www.repubblica.it ).
» State-owned RAI-1, RAI-2 and RAI-3 ( www.rai.it ) broadcast all over the country. Venice Classic Radio
( www.veniceclassicradio.eu ) mines the city's rich archive of classical, baroque and chamber music, Padua's
Megamix FM ( www.megamix.fm ) appeals to student listeners with a dance and pop repertoire (much of it in
English), and Vicenza's Golden Radio Italia ( www.goldenradio.it ) offers two internet channels, one featuring the
top 40 and the other dedicated to the best of the '80s!
» Turn on the box to watch the state-run RAI-1, RAI-2 and RAI-3 ( www.rai.it ) and the main commercial
channels (mostly run by Silvio Berlusconi's Mediaset company): Canale 5 ( www.canale5.mediaset.it ) , Italia 1
( www.italia1.mediaset.it ) , Rete 4 ( www.rete4.mediaset.it ) and LA 7 ( www.la7.it ).
