BERNINA PASS ROAD
Bare, brooding mountains and glaciers that sweep down to farmland give the landscape
around the Bernina Pass (2323m; Passo del Bernina in Italian) austere grandeur. The road
twists spectacularly from Celerina southeast to Tirano in Italy, linking Val Bernina and Val
Poschiavo.
From St Moritz, as many as 10 trains run via Pontresina (Sfr5, 10 minutes) direct to Tir-
ano (Sfr33, 2½ hours) in northern Italy. This stretch of track, known as the Bernina Line
( www.rhb-Unesco.ch ) , was added to the Unesco World Heritage list in 2008 along with the
Albula Pass. Constructed in 1910, it is one of the world's steepest narrow-gauge railways,
negotiating the highest rail crossing in Europe and taking in spectacular glaciers, gorges
and rock pinnacles.
