Discussion/conclusion.
The first hypothesis was not supported by the results, even if not by a very signif-
icant amount. The data from the Chinese sample showed the respondents pay quite
a lot of attention to the background for context cues and orientation. However, we
could not assess, whether the context (second hypothesis) was noticed first. Interest-
ingly, the Czech sample results supported our hypothesis, and valued the background
highly.

Results summary.
In all the categories, white was the clear winner, followed by blue and black. According
to the most frequent responses, commercial sites would contain white (32, 5%), silver
(20%), and black (15%). The color combinations stand for style, formality and serious
presentation. Personal sites would contain white (20%), blue (17, 5%), black (17, 5%),
and aqua (12, 5%). The color combinations stand for warmth, freshness, cuteness,
and happiness (together with lime and fuchsia). Educational sites would contain
white (37, 5%), blue (25%), and black (15%). Here, the choices underline clearness,
formality, seriousness, and maturity. Also, some respondents mentioned they knew
the colors from the Dalian Maritime University (DMU) website. Lastly, governmental
sites would contain white (35%), red (17, 5%), and black (12, 5%). The combinations
should express stability, authority, seriousness. Red stands for the national flag, the
Communist party, and enthusiasm for the masses.

Results summary.

(17, 5%), but also blue and black (each with 12, 5%). The color combinations stand
for luxury, but also solid, reliable, clean. Personal sites would mostly contain white
(20%), and maroon (12, 5%). The combinations stand for warmth, experimentation,
and harmony. Educational sites would be based on yellow, white (each with 15%),
and blue (12, 5%). They are optimistic, formal, and eye-catching. Governmental sites
would contain white (30%), blue, and black (each with 12, 5%). The colors should
be formal, accessible, traditional, and reliable.
