In-Depth Information
(3124 W Broadway; 3pm-1am Mon-Thu, 3pm-2am Fri & Sat; 9) An ever-friendly
hangout, the tiny Fringe is a reminder of Kitsilano's counterculture heritage, from its
funky memorabilia-lined walls to its chatty bar-propping regulars. Russell Brewing
beers - here called Ugly Boy Lager and Dirty Girl Pale Ale - are usually on special, but
there's also a surprising array of international bottled brews that usually includes
everything from Tyskie to Tuborg.
If you're hungry, try the Sherpa's Pie, the best of several hearty house-cooked meals
on the one-page menu. And by the way, you can't dial out on the rotary phone lamps on
the tables, no matter how drunk you are. This is a great spot to meet the locals ; you'll
overhear plenty of gossip about house prices and the bohemian good old days.

noon-1am Fri & Sat, 11am-11pm Sun; 4) The nearest good pub to UBC and one of Van-
couver's best Irish watering holes, you'll find plenty of students avoiding their assign-
ments here. They come to watch sports in the den-like back room or catch free live
Celtic music on Friday and Saturday nights. Harp and Kilkenny join Ireland's fave
stout on the beer list alongside some good BC craft brews.
Go for the Driftwood Fat Tug IPA; made in Victoria, it's arguably BC's best India
Pale Ale. Or, if you're intent on taking the dark route, try Storm Brewing's Black
Plague Stout - arguably superior to the Guinness.

pub to visit on weekday afternoons for a sly ale and some fries in a darkened corner (of
which there are many). There's a pretty good array of craft beers, often including ales
from BC darlings Driftwood and Phillips, and there are specials most days.
Tuesday is best: craft-beer sleeves are $3 and there's also an $11 beer-and-burger
deal. They also have their own liquor store next door if you're craving takeout.
