In-Depth Information
little art-lined bistro among an unassuming strip of Broadway shops. It's worth the bus
trip, though, for fresh-made aboriginal-influenced dishes made with local ingredients. If
lunching, tuck into the signature (and juicy) salmon 'n' bannock burger, made with the
popular aboriginal flat bread, a thick flatbread introduced by Scottish settlers and now a
staple of First Nations dining in BC. But if you're planning dinner, go for the velvet-
soft braised deer shank.
There's also a third option for groups of four or more: from $30 per head, you can
have a choice of four multicourse feasts (including salmon or elk) offering an adventur-
ous way to explore modern First Nations cuisine. Whatever you decide to have, wash it
down with a bottle Nk'mip, from BC's only First Nations winery.
SHIZEN YA JAPANESE $$

( www.shizenya.ca ; 1102 W Broadway; mains $8-16; 11:30am-10pm Mon-Sat; ; 9) A cut
above the area's humdrum cheap-and-cheerful sushi shops, the prices here are just as
good but the quality and service make a huge difference. Only organic brown rice is
used and there's a healthy approach which includes crispy fresh salads and quinoa spe-
cials. And while vegetarians are well looked after, the sushi is top-notch and the beef
terriyaki is a local favorite.
It can get crowded here on weekend evenings, so consider dropping in for lunch; the
well-priced combo curry-rice or udon noodle deals (both usually under $10) are recom-
mended.
LANDMARK HOTPOT HOUSE
CHINESE $$

(4013 Cambie St; mains $8-22; 5pm-2am; King Edward) Pull up a black-laquered chair
and dive into the menu at this Hong Kong-style hot-pot spot. It's a surprisingly large,
long-established place that is often bustling with locals from the Chinese-Canadian
community - usually a good sign of authenticity - and they're mostly here for plates of
meat and veggies that you cook yourself at your table via a pot of boiling broth.
A good place to come for a feast, this is also an accessible introduction to the city's
traditional Chinese dining scene.
