as chocolate lavender and fig-orange marmalade. Alternatively, go the savory route: ex-
cellent frittatas and cassoulets are also available.
There's a continental feel to the entire menu. Consider coming back for lunch and
diving into the lovely spicy lamb and beef meatballs.
TWISTED FORK BISTRO
FRENCH $$

( www.twistedforkbistro.ca ; 1147 Granville St; mains $20-22; 5:30-11pm daily & 10am-2pm Fri-
Sun; 10) The best place to park your appetite among the Granville Strip's greasy pub-
grub options, this narrow, art-lined bistro feels like it should be somewhere else. But
even clubbers need to eat well sometimes. The menu of rustic French classics includes
mussels, lamb shank and an excellent beef bourguignon, but there are also smaller tast-
ing plates if you want to share.
The drinks menu here is never an afterthought, which means some excellent BC
wines and good local craft beers to dive into. Also a popular weekend brunch spot.
TEMPLETON DINER $$

( www.thetempleton.ca ; 1087 Granville St; mains $10-14; 9am-11pm Mon-Wed, to 1am Thu-Sun;
; 10) A chrome-and-vinyl '50s-look diner with a twist, Templeton chefs up plus-
sized organic burgers, addictive fries, vegetarian quesadillas and perhaps the best
hangover cure in town - the 'Big Ass Breakfast.' Sadly, the mini jukeboxes on the
tables don't work, but you can console yourself with a waistline-busting chocolate ice-
cream float. Avoid weekend peak times or you'll be queuing for ages.
The java here comes from Oso Negro, a legendary Nelson, BC coffee roaster.
COMMUNE CAFE WEST COAST $$

( www.communecafe.ca ; 1002 Seymour St; mains $15-19; 8am-10pm Mon-Wed, to 10pm Thu &
Fri, 9am-11pm Sat & Sun; 10) Like a modern-day cafeteria, this comfortable, no-non-
sense spot offers good-value dining and a great little patio. Every week there's a special
dish (usually around the $10 mark), while the main menu revolves around locally
sourced gourmet comfort dishes such as duck confit and braised beef. It's also a good
spot for weekend brunch, and be sure to ask about the daily drinks special.
If you're in the neighborhood in the afternoon, Commune has specials of the drink
and snack variety between 3pm and 5pm: perfect for a balmy patio pit stop.
