(Ā Zōng Miànxiàn; 8-1 Emei St; noodles NT$45-60; 10am-10.30pm Mon-Sat; ; Ximen)
Every visiting Hong Kong traveller has to sample (and blog about, it seems) a bowl of
rice noodles from this Ximending stalwart. Though the slurpalicious, salty noodles are
very appealing on a cool Taipei evening, much of the fanfare comes from the the fact you
get to eat streetside (just don't forget to return your bowl when finished).
Thai Flavors THAI $$$

(Tài Fēngwèi; 25 Lane 10, Chengdu Rd; dishes NT$80-180; 2-10pm Tue-Sun; ; Ximen) Xi-
mending's Red House boasts a dozen or so restaurants and bars in the south courtyard
but don't overlook this unassuming place in the far corner. Run by Thai immigrants, Thai
Flavors serves some of the most authentic and delicious curries, soups and salads in
Taipei and at rock-bottom prices. Three types of Thai beer (NT$80) are also on offer.

Plates of raw fish and assorted sushi are pulled past customers by tiny trains and
Taiwanese pop music from the '50s fills the air in this fun throwback to a time when
Emei Street was a major commercial centre. Taipei's first conveyor-belt sushi joint, Da
Che Lun still serves first-rate seafood in this narrow, near-subterranean hideout.
Ordering here is a little different from most sushi bars as most of what you see chug-
ging past on the friends of Thomas is for display only. In general if it's wrapped, order a
fresh copy from a waitress. Otherwise it's OK to just pull the plate off as you would at
any other sushi bar.
