In-Depth Information
Shida & Da'an
The Shida (National Taiwan Normal University) area is loaded with cafeterias, small eat-
eries, funky cafes, fast-food outlets and a few excellent Western restaurants. In 2012 and
2013, the night-market area became the target of a zealous community organisation.
After their initial success in closing shops down the narrowest lanes, the group began
pushing to rid the area of bars, music venues, and anything else they didn't like. The area
may be very changed by the time you get there.
Further south, around Gongguan MRT (across from National Taiwan University),
however, you'll find another warren of cheap eat streets. Just west of Da'an Park are the
quintessential Taipei eating streets: Yongkang and Lishui Streets.
There are eat streets and then there are these streets, and their bustling side alleys,
which practically define Taipei's food scene as the joyful and near superlative experience
it is. Some of the best dumplings, beef noodles, Taiwanese and Japanese restaurants can
be found here, in addition to places serving shaved ice, Vietnamese and vegetarian
dishes. Stylish cafes with private decks and patios dot the blocks south of Yongkang
Park, the small centrepiece of the neighbourhood. Dongmen MRT station Exit 5 literally
drops you off at the top of Yongkang Street.
AFTER-HOURS EATS
Between Technology Building and Da'an MRT stations you'll find restaurants
serving stomach-soothing Taiwanese items such aswēn dòujiāng(warm soy milk)
andqīngzhoù(thin rice porridge served with chunks of sweet potato). Some are
open very late, and are popular with the post-libation bar crowd. Other places for a
late-night fill include 21 Goose & Seafood ( Click here ) , Lin Dong Sen Beef Noodles
Shida Night Market MARKET $
(Shīdà Lù Yèshì) Though the market has been reduced in scale, at the time of writing it was
still a lively place for a cheap feed of traditional snacks, for shopping, or for just hanging
out in any number of small restaurants and cafes.
