Flycutters
Flycutters can be particularly dangerous. A flycutter is usually quite a large
diameter and has a single cutting tooth, often extending outside the main
body of the flycutter. As flycutters are usually run at a fairly high speed, this
cutting tooth is often running so fast that it is virtually invisible. Also, the swarf
will fly considerable distances. So, when running a flycutter keep your hands
well away from the cutting tooth, always use a guard, and always make sure
the swarf is flying away from you, not towards you. I have never had a serious
accident in the workshop, but the closest I came to it was with a flycutter, it
just nicked a slice of skin off a finger because I put my finger too close after
switching the machine off. The cutter had not quite stopped, it could have
been much worse. You have been warned.
