UP-CUT AND DOWN-CUT MILLING - A WARNING!
There are two types of milling cut, up-cut and down-cut. Up-cut milling pushes the ma-
terial and the job away from the cutter. Down-cut milling pulls the work into the cutter.
On simple manual milling machines like we are looking at here, up-cut milling is the
only method we shall be using.
Down-cut milling could cause a nasty accident by pulling the work into the machine,
possibly shattering the cutter and damaging the milling machine and even damaging
you. CNC mills and machining centres have special leadscrews suitable for down-cut
milling.
Just because you see down-cut milling elsewhere does not mean you should use it.
