In-Depth Information
Fig. 7.1 Machine jacks are easy to make in the home workshop. This is an example
of a hollow jack. The threaded bolt goes into the hollow base through a clearance
hole. The jack height is adjusted by the shouldered nut on top of the base.
Machining a flat surface
Face mills
Although we have machined a block square ( see Chapter 6 ) , we did not look
at the cutters to do this. You can buy face mills to clean up an entire face in
one pass, but they may be too large a load on a small milling machine. By
all means try a good carbide-tipped face mill if you can borrow one, but do
not buy one until you know if your milling machine has the power and rigidity
needed to use it.
End mill or slot drill
A good alternative is a large end mill or slot drill. The largest cutter shank a
hobby machine is likely to take will be a 16mm shank, and cutters up to 20mm
diameter are readily available with a 16mm shank. If you have an old cutter
that may be slightly blunt, a small 1mm × 45 degree chamfer ground on each
