MILLING APPLICATIONS
Using jacks
Jacks are useful to support the work being machined. There are two main
types of jack. The first is a solid piece of metal (usually round) with a threaded
hole down the middle to take a bolt. The bolt is locked by a nut that tightens
against the jack body. The other type is a hollow jack, a body with a plain hole
through. An adjustable nut and a bolt allow for adjusting to different heights.
In use they are placed under the work that needs supporting and the bolt
screwed out to support the work. There are many uses for the jacks; a couple
of pairs are very simple to make in the home workshop.
