Side-lock holders
A side-lock holder has an outside taper or shape (usually 2 or 3 Morse taper
or R8) to fit the machine.
The holder will have a precision ground bore (such as 1 2 in (12mm) that is
a good fit on the cutter. The cutter will be tightened up by a grub screw which
presses on a parallel flat on the side of the cutter shank. Ideally the holder
will have an internal grub screw or stop so the cutter cannot push back in the
chuck. There is another type of side-lock holder, where the cutter has a flat
groundonaslightangle(usuallyacoupleofdegrees)anddeeperatthelower
end, so the cutter cannot pull out of the side-lock holder.
