In-Depth Information
Fig. 4.17. This inserted tip has eight sides. They last a lot longer than the more usual
three or four sided tips.
Inserted tip types
There are many shapes and sizes of inserts. Some milling inserts are made to
an international standard while others are made to the maker's own standard.
Wherever possible, use ISO tips and cutters as they will be interchangeable
with other manufacturers. The USA has its own system, the ANSI system,
which is not compatible with the ISO system as used in the rest of the world.
CUTTER HOLDERS
There are a few systems of holding cutters, standard end mills and slot drills
in the milling machine. You can get the inserted tip cutters with both plain par-
allel shanks and Morse taper shanks. Most end mills and slot drills come with
parallel shanks, sometimes with a cut-out to take a grub screw in a side-lock
holder.
