In-Depth Information
Fig. 4.18. A side lock holder is so called because the cutter is held in place with a
screw into the side of the holder. It is seen here with a 10mm diameter edge finder.
EXTENDING CUTTERS
Almost any parallel shank cutter can be extended by making an extension shank for it.
The extension is simply a round bar with a hole drilled and reamed (or bored) into it to
take the shank of the cutter that requires extending. This method is particularly use-
ful for extending FC3 cutters which have very short shanks and equally short cutting
flutes.
Make the extension by drilling and reaming the hole and turning the shank diameter
at the same time to ensure concentricity. You can fix the cutter in with a grub screw,
by soft or silver soldering or even by using Loctite engineering adhesives.
Make sure any grub screw does not protrude from the shank diameter or you could
catch your clothes or hand on it. I have seen someone have his overall, shirt and vest
ripped off when he caught them on a long grub screw. He spent two weeks over Christ-
mas in hospital all because he lost a short grub screw and replaced it with a longer
one.
