The neoclassical facade has aged with considerable grace at
this marble temple to stylish glamour. Free goldfish on request and a geometric, deco-in-
spired interior help polish the 1930s cool-daddy-o vibe. All this is in the historic, grand
Corinthian-columned 1839 Tariff Building. The location works well for families: it's
across the street from the Spy Museum, Smithsonian American Art Museum and Metro,
and just four blocks from the Mall.

One of the most affordable options near the Mall, this aging,
family-run hotel has small, basic rooms that are clean but in definite need of an update.
Helpful service and a great location make the Harrington great value for travelers who
don't mind a little lack of amenities.

One of the city's great heritage hotels, the Hay is a beautiful old building, where
'nothing is overlooked but the White House.' It's named for two mansions that once
stood on the site (owned by secretary of state John Hay and historian Henry Adams) that
were the nexus of Washington's political and intellectual elite. Today the hotel has a
palazzo-style lobby and probably the best rooms of the old-school luxury genre in the cit
y: puffy mattresses like clouds, four- poster canopies and gold-braid tassels.

Listed on the Register of Historic Places, this elegant
inn comprises two 1864 residences filled with fine antiques, chandeliers, richly hued
