Raising Logs
Regardless of how logs are lifted, it must be
done safely. The size of the cabin, the terrain
upon which it will sit, and your budget will
determine what method you will use.
(A) The Land Rover was elevated by driving it up
onto the bed of a truck; this creative use of gin
poles to lift the logs was born of necessity, but
is not a recommended method. (B) In pioneer
times, cabins were erected by as many hands
as the owner could corral; here, workshop par-
ticipants heft logs. (C) A knuckle boom works
well also. (D, E) Whether it uses a strap or log
tongs, a crane is very efficient, especially if it
can be parked in one spot and has a reach long
enough to put all the logs up from that spot.
