Jazzheads will want to settle in at this little cafe on Sunday afternoon (from 4.30pm) for
an open session that has earned quite a following. The rest of the week, it's a tranquil
place to sip a beer by the sunny windows. ( www.cafe-de-engelbewaarder.nl ; Kloveniersburgwal 59;

BROWN CAFE
If the three catchwords for real estate are location, location and location, then Koosje -
located between the Artis Royal Zoo and the Hollandsche Schouwburg - has got a lock on
the market. Perch yourself at the window or on the terrace to soak up the great corner
vibe. ( www.koosjeamsterdam.nl ; Plantage Middenlaan 37;

It has the brew tanks, it has the beautiful hardwood interior, it even has the history - a
16th-century brewery-cloister run by nuns. Stop in for a meal of pub grub to go with the
house suds, or hoist a glass to start an evening on Nieuwmarkt. ( www.debekeerdesuster.nl ; Kloven-
iersburgwal 6-8;

Nieuwmarkt)
Understand
Tilted Architecture
No, you're not drunk... Amsterdam's buildings are leaning. Some - like De Sluyswacht ( Click here ) - have
shifted over the centuries, but many canal houses were deliberately constructed to tip forward. Interior staircases
were narrow, so owners needed an easy way to move large goods and furniture to the upper floors. The solution:
a hoist built into the gable, to lift objects up and in through the windows. The tilt allows loading without bump-
ing into the house front.
