Multiple or reinforced studs
These are studs fixed together to make larger-section timbers, which are positioned under
areas of greater loading where additional strength is required. For example, they may be
used to support a large beam or a lintel (see Figure 6), or at the corner of a building.

They are fixed together using nails, screws or even coach bolts if they are very large, and
may require additional fixings to the sole or wall plates via stainless-steel angle brackets.
Wall plate
The wall plate runs along the top of the studs and is fixed on to them from above, using
two stainless-steel nails or screws per stud. The function of the wall plate is to provide a
fix for the top of the studs, stopping them moving independently from each other, and also
