7.1 Introduction
The software architecture of the Microsoft products incorporate something called a Component Object
Model (COM) software package. The SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office is a COM package. Once installed
into Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft products, the SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office gives you access
to SAS features directly from Excel. The SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office is part of SAS Enterprise Guide,
SAS Enterprise Business Intelligence Server, and SAS Enterprise Miner. These are separately available
SAS products.
The ability to use Excel to access SAS data will be described here. My system has these products installed,
so I will show you some of the methods that Excel can use to access SAS data using the SAS Add-In for
Microsoft Office. This software extends the functionality of Microsoft Office products using the add-in by
allowing direct access to SAS datasets from within the Microsoft products.
Here we will demonstrate how you can identify and use SAS data from within Excel to perform limited
Read and Write functions from Excel with SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office 6.1. Specifically, SAS Add-In
for Microsoft Office can function and process SAS datasets without using a metadata server, as long as
SAS Enterprise Business Intelligence Server and SAS Enterprise Miner are installed.
7.2 Purpose
This chapter will introduce you to the features of SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office as it relates to reading
and writing SAS data to and from Excel workbooks. Once the data is in the workbook or out of the
workbook, then my task of showing you how to move the data is complete.
