As with accommodation, the best Tibetan, Nepali and Western restaurants are in the
Tibetan quarter around the Barkhor Sq area. Almost all places offer decent breakfasts, per-
haps the best being at the Lhasa Kitchen and Snowland restaurants. All the eateries listed
serve lunch and dinner, but you will struggle to find a meal after about 10pm. For the
flashiest Chinese restaurants you'll have to head to the western districts.
With the arrival of half-a-dozen Nepali restaurants, Lhasa now rivals Kathmandu in its
range of foreign foods (though prices are a bit higher). All offer a mix of Indian, pseudo-
Chinese and Western dishes for about ¥40, with Indian vegie dishes cheaper. If you're
hankering for a
dal bhat
(lentils and rice), masala chai or banana lassi, make a beeline for
these places.
There are several simple hole-in-the-wall Chinese places down the alleys off Beijing
Donglu.

With a wide-ranging menu of Nepali, Indian and Tibetan dishes, good breakfast options,
decent prices, pleasant seating and a great location, it's no surprise that this is an extremely
popular place with tour groups and locals alike. The menu covers everything from veget-
able
dopiaza
(onion-based curry) to cheese and tomato toast. Service can be brusque.

For a taste of Tibetan homemade recipes like yak meat in tomato sauce or
droma desi
(sweet rice with wild ginseng, raisins and yoghurt), put in an order with chef Namdon an
hour or two in advance. Better still, take the two-hour cooking class (¥100 per person, in-
cluding dinner), during which you can learn to make authentic home-made
momos
(Tibetan dumplings) and Amdo-style noodles.
The restaurant is hard to find, in a courtyard off Danjielin Lu, so call ahead. Namdon
also offers a laundry service (¥40 per kg).
