In-Depth Information
Old Lhasa hands like this unpretentious slice of old Lhasa for its mellow vibe, cheerful
service, cheap prices and great location. The food can be hit and miss but there are plenty
of breakfast and vegetarian options. Try the
bobis
(chapati-like unleavened bread), which
come with seasoned cream cheese and fried vegetables or meat, or some fried apple
momos
.
Pentoc Tibetan Restaurant
TIBETAN
Charming English-speaking Pentoc runs this local teahouse restaurant after working in
Tashi I for many years. Authentically Tibetan, the simple menu includes breakfasts, and
Pentoc's is a good place to try homemade Tibetan standards such as
momos
and
shemdre
(rice, potato and yak meat), plus butter tea,
chang
and even
dal bhat
. It's 20m down an al-
leyway off Beijing Donglu, on the left.
Woeser Zedroe Tibetan Restaurant
TIBETAN
This is where visiting and local Tibetans come to fill up after a visit to the Jokhang. Add
some pleasant traditional seating and a perfect location to the Tibetan vibe and it's a logic-
al lunch stop. The
momos
are recommended, especially the fried yak meat or cheese vari-
eties. Skip the boiled yak hooves and the phenomenally expensive dishes made with
cordyceps.
Father Vegetarian Restaurant
TIBETAN
This new hole in the wall ('Yebche Gartse Suertob' in Tibetan) is a good place to get a
cheap and authentic vegetarian lunch squeezed in among tables of Tibetan families and the
occasional monk. Limited English is spoken so go with your Tibetan guide. The combo
dishes with rice are good value and the Tibetan-style fried mushrooms (,
zāngshì
chǎomógu
) are particularly recommended.
