PRACTICAL TIP
HAVE A BLAST ON THE BUS!
It's a poorly kept secret that one of Berlin's best bargains is a self-guided city tour
aboard bus 100 or 200, the routes of which check off nearly every major sight in the
city centre for the price of a public-transport ticket (tariff AB, €2.60). You can even
get on and off within the two hours of its validity period as long as you continue in the
same direction. If you plan to explore all day, a Tageskarte(day pass, €6.70) is your
best bet.
Bus 100 travels from Bahnhof Zoo (Zoo Station) to Alexanderplatz, passing the
Gedächtniskirche, the Siegessäule in the Tiergarten, the Reichstag, the Brandenbur-
ger Tor (Brandenburg Gate) and Unter den Linden. Bus 200 also starts at Bahnhof
Zoo but follows a more southerly route via the Kulturforum museums and Potsdamer
Platz before hooking up with Unter den Linden. Without traffic, trips take about 30
minutes. There's no commentary, of course, but it's still a great overview and useful
for orientation and understanding the layout of the central city.
Buses run every few minutes but they do get crowded, so be wary of pickpockets.
To snag a seat on the upper deck, it's best to board at either terminus, ie Bahnhof Zoo
or Alexanderplatz.
